What else do you expect?

Yes, hide under the bed at night;
The men with guns will get you too.
Cry and wonder what you have done
To deserve the death around you.
Among the empty shells of houses,
Watch the black fighter planes overhead.
Hear the bombs crashing around you
Seeking more company for the dead.

Be woken up by a soldier at dawn.
Hold your child close in pure fear;
And have her brains blown out anyway
In your arms – this you must bear.

Let your clothes be stripped from you.
Let your things be burnt in unholy fire.
Let the men use you as they wish.
Let your own spirit be a stretched wire.
A wire which can’t hold the tension,
A wire which longs to snap and break.
You cannot escape. You cannot flee.
Any hope of safety is all a fake.

A magazine flutters on the ground –
Happy people, smiling at some party.
They don’t care. They don’t want to care.
Wait for the fighter planes silently.
